Permanent Mission to UN: Azerbaijan commends efforts aimed at fostering secure and stable environment for information and communications technology

Washington, October 23, AZERTAC“Information and communications technologies (ICTs) continue to transform societies, creating significant opportunities for sustainable development, economic growth, innovation and enhanced connectivity, while supporting the delivery of essential public services, including in the fields of healthcare and education,” said Magsad Huseynov, First Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, while delivering a statement during the thematic discussion on Other Disarmament Measures and International Security at the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly. “As States increasingly rely on ICTs across all sectors, the security and resilience of the digital environment have become matters of growing importance.

Malicious ICT activities continue to increase in frequency, scale and sophistication, with the potential to affect critical infrastructure, critical information infrastructure and essential services, undermine trust and confidence, spread misinformation and disinformation, and generate consequences that extend beyond national borders. These developments underscore the importance of strengthening international cooperation and advancing practical measures aimed at reducing risks, enhancing resilience and supporting the secure, stable, accessible, peaceful and interoperable use of ICTs. Azerbaijan has consistently supported the work of the Open-ended Working Group on security of and in the use of information and communications technologies 2021-2025 (OEWG), featuring the participation of all Member States and operating on a consensus basis.
