Tajikistan plans to increase electricity exports to Afghanistan and construct a new 500-kilovolt (kV) transmission line, according to Afghanistan’s General Directorate of State-Owned Corporations. The plans were reportedly discussed during a meeting in Dushanbe between Mahmadomar Asozoda, head of OJSC Barqi Tojik, and Abdul Haq Hamkar, head of Afghanistan’s state electricity company Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS). The sides discussed increasing electricity supplies, expanding transmission infrastructure, improving electricity quality and voltage, tariffs and investment opportunities. They also considered training technical specialists and strengthening long-term cooperation in the energy sector. Tajikistan informed its Afghan partners about plans to build the 500 kV transmission line and said it was ready to consider Afghanistan’s request for higher electricity supplies.

No specific increase in export volumes or implementation timeline has been announced. The parties agreed to continue negotiations through technical and commercial working groups. Afghanistan remains Tajikistan’s main electricity buyer Tajikistan exported 1. 045 billion kWh of electricity worth 292. 2 million somoni in the first half of 2026, according to the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources. Export volumes declined by 7%, or 78. 1 million kWh, compared with the same period in 2025.
